AFLL Week in Review (Week 13)

ANVILS 68 at Valhalla 55


GAME STORY: The Anvils (9-4) ended their losing streak a week ago and kept the good feelings going by beating Valhalla (3-10) on the road. QB JOE MONTANA helped Anvils come back from a 34-19 halftime deficit with seven touchdown passes and 815 passing yards. Valhalla QB MICHAEL VICK had a nice evening with 585 yards and five touchdowns, WR GARY CLARK and WR DOUG BALDWIN caught a couple scores each.


GAME BALLS: (O) – Anvils WR CALVIN JOHNSON tied for the team lead with 13 receptions but paced the team with 318 yards and five touchdown catches.

(D) – Anvils DB LARRY WILSON led the way with 10 tackles and threw in a couple of knock downs.


Birds of Prey 34 at HEROES FC 41


GAME STORY: Heroes FC (7-6) kept the wild card spot hopes alive with another important win in the final week before divisional battles start up again. Birds of Prey (1-12) made things interesting, but QB JOHNNY UNITAS (491-4-1) couldn’t lead the team to a comeback despite two scoring drives in the fourth quarter. WR CHAD JOHNSON caught two touchdown passes, WR ED McCAFFREY and RB JAMAL LEWIS added single scores. Heroes FC QB STEVE YOUNG overcame five total turnovers throwing for 627 yards and four touchdowns and WR TIM BROWN was one of two players to go over 100 yards receiving for FC.


GAME BALLS: (O) – Heroes FC TE TONY GONZALEZ was everywhere with 17 receptions, 376 yards and three touchdowns.

(D) – Heroes FC DB BRIAN DAWKINS led the squad with 11 tackles and knocked down a couple of passes.


ORIGINALS 102 at Immortals 79


GAME STORY: The Originals (5-8) have put together back-to-back wins and scored another season high with 102 points shocking the Immortals (10-3) and not allowing them to move within a game of first place Fury in the Don Shula Division. Originals WR JAMES LOFTON (7-269-6) and WR ERIC MOULDS (17-258-5) combined for 11 touchdowns for the Originals. The Originals D made life miserable for Immortals QB BRETT FAVRE and held him under 50 per cent completion rate and picked off four of his passes despite the fact he threw for over 1000 yards. WR JERRY RICE had an outstanding game with 21 receptions, 544 yards and three touchdowns.


GAME BALLS: (O) – Originals QB DREW BREES is looking more and more comfortable in the offence with 1281 yards and 12 touchdowns, by far his best game this season.

(D) – Originals DE RICHARD DENT was in Favre’s face all game long with seven sacks.


Hunters 19 at THROWBACKS 39


GAME STORY: The Walter Camp Division will have two teams fighting for top spot in the final three weeks thanks to Throwbacks (6-7) 20-point victory. TE KEITH JACKSON led the team in receptions (8), yards (146) and touchdowns (2) for the Throwbacks, QB TERRY BRADSHAW had a gritty performance with 474 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The Hunters (2-11) got an all-round effort from RB CURTIS MARTIN who combined for 122 yards and a touchdown. QB DAN MARINO threw two costly picks and managed just 372 passing yards and a touchdown.


GAME BALLS: (O) – The Throwbacks are going to ride RB BARRY SANDERS down the stretch here especially with his 125 rushing yards, four receptions for 72 yards and one touchdown.

(D) – LB ROBERT BRAZILE had 11 tackles and one interception for the Throwbacks.


Diamonds 39 at BEOWULF 66


GAME STORY: Beowulf (7-6) watched their divisional rival; Throwbacks win so they made sure to stay on top of the Walter Camp with a victory of their own. The two teams will face each other in Week 14. Beowulf’s TE DAVE CASPER (299-1), WR JIMMY SMITH (260-3) and WR DON HUTSON (255-4) all went over 200 yards receiving and RB ERIC METCALF scored another touchdown. The Diamonds (2-11) got a solid performance from QB ROGER STAUBACH (416-3-0) and team owner WR CRIS CARTER (5-163-1).


GAME BALLS: (O) – Beowulf QB BART STARR almost hit 1000 yards passing (989) and had eight touchdown passes.

(D) – Diamonds DB GARY FENCIK had a game high 13 tackles and one interception to go with one sack.


FANCENTRIC FRENZY 43 at ELITE 30


GAME STORY: FanCentric Frenzy (7-6) stayed two games back of Tony Dungy Division leading Anvils with their win on Sunday. The Frenzy will face off against the Anvils in Week 14 in another must watch game next week. QB RANDALL CUNNINGHAM scrambled and threw his way to 519 yards, four touchdowns and most importantly, zero interceptions. ELITE (4-9) QB JOHN ELWAY was sacked nine times and that could explain why he threw four interceptions, WR MICHAEL IRVIN was his favourite target catching eight balls for 218 yards and a score.


GAME BALLS: (O) – Frenzy TE JACKIE SMITH had a game to remember with 28 receptions for 347 yards and three touchdowns.

(D) – The Minister of Defence prayed his way to eight sacks and was a disruptive force for the Frenzy.


EOD DEMO GODS 121 at Fury 52


GAME STORY: The first game of the MNF double header was a phenomenal upset. EOD DEMO GODS (10-3) went toe-to-toe with Fury (12-1) in the first half as the two teams combined for 112 first half points with the Demo Gods leading 63-49. It was the third quarter where the visitors took over and eventually handed Fury their first loss of the season. RB WARRICK DUNN scored two rushing touchdowns and WR STERLING SHARPE and TE MARK BAVARO had four receiving TDs apiece for the Demo Gods. Fury QB PEYTON MANNING was sacked 17 times and threw five interceptions and completed less than 50 per cent of his passes.


GAME BALLS: (O) Demo Gods QB WARREN MOON threw for 1249 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.

(D) – Demo Gods DL NEIL SMITH paced the furious pass rush with 10 sacks.


Time Bandits 26 at GOATS 119


GAME STORY: The Time Bandits (9-4) offence completely dried up after scoring 26 points in the first two quarters in the loss to the GOATS (9-4). QB FRAN TARKENTON had nine, count them, NINE turnovers (four interceptions, five fumbles) for the Time Bandits and that allowed the GOATS to take over. QB OTTO GRAHAM locked on to just three receivers in his pass only offence. TE JASON WITTEN had 15 receptions for 408 yards and six touchdowns WR STEVE LARGENT added 162 yards and four touchdowns. The GOATS will face EOD Demo Gods with a chance to pull into a tie for first in the Jim Thorpe Division next week.


GAME BALLS: (O) – TE JOHN MACKEY had 29 receptions for 582 yards and four touchdowns for the GOATS.

(D) – GOATS had 22 sacks, but the game ball goes to DB Jack Christensen who had 16 tackles, one interception and one knockdown.
