AFLL Week in Review (Week 6)
ELITE 53 at FURY 93
GAME STORY: Fury become the first franchise to reach 500 points scored in 2022 and improve to 6-0 in the process with a 40-point win over ELITE (1-5), who have dropped five straight since winning the season opener. ELITE QB JOHNNY UNITAS had a tough day with four total turnovers, RB ERIC DICKERSON totaled 115 yards and a touchdown, and the unstoppable TE KELLEN WINSLOW had 208 receiving yards to go with three touchdown receptions. FURY TE ANTONIO GATES outdid his positional counterpart with 402 yards receiving and five touchdowns, WR MARVIN HARRISON had four touchdown receptions and 291 yards receiving, RB MARSHALL FAULK had 50 yards rushing and 109 yards receiving.
GAME BALLS: (O) – Fury QB PEYTON MANNING is accepting the challenge of who is the best QB in the AFLL with 1178 yards passing and 12 touchdowns.
(D) – Fury LB JACK LAMBERT was as terrifying as he was weekly in real life with 13 tackles and two interceptions.
Valhalla 16 at TIME BANDITS 40
GAME STORY: Valhalla (1-5) dropped their second in a row when running into one of the hottest teams in the league right now, the Time Bandits (4-2) who have won four in a row and stayed within two games of first place Fury in the Don Shula Division. Valhalla tried to get RB JIM BROWN involved on Sunday and for the most part they succeeded with Brown rushing for 52 yards and adding 69 receiving yards. QB MICHAEL VICK had two picks and was sacked 16 times. Time Bandits QB FRAN TARKENTON went for 462 yards and three touchdowns.
GAME BALLS: (O) – Time Bandits WR ERIC DECKER was Vick’s favourite target on the day with 13 receptions for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
(D) – LB BOBBY BELL led the sack attack for the Time Bandits with 14 and thus the game ball.
EOD Demo Gods 56 at ANVILS 68
GAME STORY: EOD Demo Gods (4-2) saw their four-game win streak end as they fell to the Anvils (6-0), who stayed with Fury as the only remaining unbeaten teams in the AFLL. EOD led 46-40 after three quarters but the home team took over in the fourth outscoring the visitors 28-10. WR CALVIN JOHNSON (8-235-2) and WR REGGIE WAYNE (12-203-1) both went over 200 yards receiving for the Anvils. EOD QB WARREN MOON didn’t throw any interceptions, but his completion percentage was below 50 per cent. WR ISSAC BRUCE caught four of Moon’s five touchdown passes.
GAME BALLS: (O) – QB JOE MONTANA had 848 yards and eight touchdown passes, he is third in passing yards (4225) and touchdowns (35).
(D) – ANVILS DL ART DONOVAN is now the AFLL sacks leader as he added 10 more on Sunday to put him at 39 for the season.
Heroes FC 16 at BEOWULF 58
GAME STORY: Beowulf (3-3) moved to. 500, ending their two-game losing streak with an impressive win over Heroes FC (2-4). RB ERIC METCALF scored another touchdown for Beowulf and TE DAVE CASPER caught 7 balls for 300 yards and a score, WR JIMMY SMITH caught two touchdown passes to go along with 131 receiving yards. Heroes FC QB STEVE YOUNG had a tough day throwing four interceptions and WR MIKE QUICK caught 21 of Young’s 47 completions on the day.
GAME BALLS: (O) – Beowulf QB BART STARR ran the show and ran it well with 750 yards, seven touchdowns and just one interception.
(D) – Beowulf DB CLIFF HARRIS had 23 tackles, 12 more tackles than the next closest member the defence, MIKE HAYNES. Harris had five knockdowns as well.
Birds of Prey 6 at HUNTERS 54
GAME STORY: Birds of Prey (1-5) could not build off their first win of the season after getting steamrolled by the Hunters (2-4) on Sunday. Birds of Prey have a combined six points in their last two losses as they try to figure things out on the offensive side of the football. Full credit to the Hunters defence as they shut down BOP QB JOHN ELWAY who completed less than 50 per cent of his passes and finished with 182 passing yards. Hunters QB DAN MARINO was sacked 11 times but bounced back from the abuse to throw for 569 yards and three touchdowns.
GAME BALLS: (O) – Marino’s favourite target was WR BOB HAYES who took two of his six receptions to the house to go with his 248 receiving yards.
(D) – Hunters defence had 18 sacks of Elway, DL CLAUDE HUMPHREY had nine of them and one forced fumble.
ORIGINALS 59 at Diamonds 7
GAME STORY: One part of the Originals game plan was to shut down Diamonds RB THURMAN THOMAS, who had 135 total yards in Week 5. That plan worked, Thomas had 21 carries for eight yards and didn’t catch a single pass. The Originals (3-3) have won two straight, overcoming five interceptions from QB DREW BREES, who passed for 895 yards and seven touchdowns. WR ERIC MOULDS had 25 receptions for 206 yards and three touchdowns and didn’t get the game ball (more on that in a second). Diamonds (1-5) QB ROGER STAUBACH threw four interceptions and had 234 passing yards and just the one touchdown.
GAME BALLS: (O) – Originals TE VERNON DAVIS does it again, this time with 23 receptions for 330 yards and four touchdowns. Davis has 538 receiving yards the last two weeks.
(D) – Originals DL MICHAEL DEAN PERRY had seven of the team’s 13 sacks.
GOATS 6 at FANCENTRIC FRENZY 40
GAME STORY: Sunday Night Football has not been the best stage for the GOATS who have dropped back-to-back games in primetime scoring a combined 29 points in the process. The GOATS (4-2) QB OTTO GRAHAM was contained for a second consecutive week throwing for just 177 yards, 0 touchdowns and two INT’s. FanCentric Frenzy QB RANDALL CUNNINGHAM wasn’t much better, throwing for three interceptions and 568 yards. WR ANDRE REED caught Cunningham’s only touchdown and 103 receiving yards, WR CHARLIE JOINER also went over 100 yards with 156 yards on nine receptions.
GAME BALLS: (O) Frenzy RB OLLIE MATSON had a hell of a day, rushing for 41 yards and a score AND leading the team with 173 receiving yards.
(D) – Frenzy DL CURLEY CULP took advantage of an overwhelmed GOATS OL sacking Graham 15 times on Sunday night.
IMMORTALS 76 at Throwbacks 21
GAME STORY: You have to respect any team that stays with the running game especially the way defences are shutting down the run this season. Immortals RB GALE SAYERS rushed for a season high 137 yards on 41 carries and a touchdown and that helped pace the Immortals (4-2) and keep them in second place in the Don Shula Division. QB BRETT FAVRE threw for 563 yards and seven touchdowns, four of those went to TE SHANNON SHARPE. Throwbacks QB TERRY BRADSHAW threw three interceptions along with 628 yards.
GAME BALLS: (O) – The Throwbacks (3-3) loss cannot be blamed on TE KEITH JACKSON who went OFF on Monday night, catching 27 balls for 411 yards and a touchdown.
(D) – DB MEL RENFRO led the Immortals defence with 17 tackles and four knockdowns.
